NEWS POST:-Kalka Mail Accident

The Kalka Mail Accident was the derailment of a train near Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India on 10 July 2011. At least 35 people are killed and 140 injured in the accident. The main cause is yet unknown, however, Sources claim that the train derailed following the sudden use of the emergency breaks .

Overview

The accident occurred at 12:30 PM, when the 14 coaches of Howrah-Kalka Mail derailed near Fatehpur Malwa, about 65 km from Kanpur. The train had left Howrah with over 1,000 people on board, and was heading towards New Delhi when the tragedy happened.

The train was travelling at a speed of 105 km/h on the Howrah - New Delhi Line when it derailed

Fire and sparks have been reported in the AC compartments of the train.  The coaches were being cut with gas cutters and more than 200 policemen are conducting rescue operations^[1].

The Indian Army has deployed 100 soldiers in the accident site. Two rescue trains from Kanpur and Allahabad respectively have reached the accident site

South Sudan becomes world’s newest nation

 – With the reading of the Declaration of Independence and the raising of its new flag, South Sudan became a republic and being the 193rd nation of the world on.

Under a blanket of moist, oppressive heat, tens of thousands gathered in a field surrounding the mausoleum of John Garang, the late rebel army leader who is considered the father of the nation, and shouted deliriously as the flag of Sudan was lowered and that of South, raised.

"I feel great," said Samuel Malual through a wide smile as he watched the new flag go up. "We have waited so long for this. It means we are no longer oppressed."

At long last they were officially a sovereign nation, no longer attached to their longtime nemesis in the North, against which the South fought two civil wars over five decades, leaving about 2.5 million dead.

By habit, at one point the announcer used the term "Southerner" to refer to the people.
 
"We aren't southern to anyone anymore!"  a sweaty Paul Manyok shouted back, to the nods of those around him.

"We are South Sudanese. We are the Republic of South Sudan."

The new President, Salva Kiir, signed a transitional constitution and then took the oath of office. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted on charges of genocide in Darfur, looked on. 

Delegations attended from countries around the world, and the United Nations.

Some notables included former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who played a large role in the forging of a 2005 peace agreement that led to a referendum and today's secession, and Ban Ki Moon, the UN secretary general.

Officially, South Sudan became an independent country as of midnight local time. And Southerners partied throughout the night. Those with cars honked their horns and spun up clouds of dust on the dirt roads. Music seemed to come from everywhere.

The Republic of South Sudan becomes the 193rd country and Africa’s 54th state. 

But the country is also described by a whole set of other numbers far less flattering. They illustrate a fledgling nation that is starting from a point of utter misery. 

The vast majority of people live on less than a dollar a day. The highest maternal mortality rate in the world. A 27 per cent literacy rate. To just name a few.

And there are security threats both from within the new nation and without. 

The government and its Sudan People’s Liberation Army are dealing with several rebel insurrections in Upper Nile state and elsewhere. It claims Khartoum is arming these rebels, a charge the North denies. 

There are bloody inter-tribal conflicts, between Nuer, Dinka and Merle tribes especially, that continue to erupt and kill dozens, hundreds. 

And most threatening of all, there is the growing enmity with their former nemesis in the North.

Khartoum faces serious economic consequences from the separation, since about 80 per cent of Sudan's oil exports come from the South. 

Bashir's forces have since May launched attacks or occupied several disputed border areas. In May his troops invaded Abyei, a region around which there are rich oil deposits. Abyei is contested and was supposed to hold its own referendum on its status, which has now been put off indefinitely.

Bashir also continued Khartoum’s aggression against anti-government elements by launching vicious attacks against SPLA soldiers and sympathizers in South Kordofan, but also by targeting civilians. 

The targeting of civilians has long been a tactic used by the Muslim and Arab North’s forces in its conflicts in the South, the Nuba Mountains, and Darfur, where it used its Antonov bombers and fighter jets and militias on horseback on the ground to wage war over ethnicity and religion, along with oil and power.

Islamist government officials weren’t afraid of using the word “jihad” to describe their efforts. 

The South is primarily black African and Christian or animist. In Darfur they are mainly Muslim but many tribes are not Arab. 

But the South fought against the imposition of Sharia Law by Khartoum and what it considered extreme governmental neglect. Indeed, over 50 years of fighting, still there were no proper paved roads in Juba, South Sudan’s capital. 

Sudan has maintained public attention abroad, especially during the armed conflict in Darfur thay began in 2003. The fact that many Hollywood celebrities have taken up its cause has also helped.

Indian Internet Usage: Interesting statistics and analysis

I came across a snapshot of report ‘India Online 2007‘ released by Juxtconsult . The report gives details on the study carried out to understand the Internet users in India. Some of the findings that were listed really surprised me. I will have a look at the few interesting findings that were part of the snapshot published by them.

These findings are based on feedback from few thousand people from different geographies and various population sizes. I think the foot print of people surveyed is not too big, so there may be a margin of error on all India basis.

Let us analyze some of the interesting findings.

Only 37% of Indian Internet users come from Top 10 cities

This was my biggest surprise. My estimation was that 90% of Internet users come from top 10 cities. Imagine that none of the 63% Internet users are from Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat and Nagpur. I am saying this because, if I do traffic analysis for my blog, more than 97% of the readers come from these top 10 cities. This is based on approx 27,000 visits I have received from India since last month. You could argue that Blogs are read by only urban population. But that reasoning will not hold true because majority of my traffic does comes from search engine (approx. 85%), so they do not know whether it is a blog or a site. They are just searching for information.

Only 41% prefer to read English

Another surprise to me. More than half of Indian people do not like reading English when on the net. I am again not too sure of this. If that was the case, portals like Rediff, Indiatimes, Sifyand hundreds of other sites would have invested in having a localized language versions. Imagine the kind of traffic growth that they would have had. I am not saying that there are people who would like to read only English, but most users would prefer that.

77% of users accessing from homes use a broadband or superior connection

I cannot really debate this number due to lack of information. But it still surprises me a lot. Till first quarter of this year broadband penetration in India was less than 10%. As of April 2007, only 2.5 million subscribers out of 30 million subscribers had broadband connections and they were mostly NOT Home users.

51% of users accessed dating / friendship sites

This is quite amazing. More than 50% users accessing dating / friendship sites. That means more than 15 million users have accessed these sites. In the same survey they have mentioned that ‘19 to 35 years age groups account for only 67% of the internet users?’. I estimate most of these age group users to be the ones accessing it. If that is true, do the maths. 15 million out of 20 million people access dating sites- A whooping 75% – How many of you access it?

I do appreciate the effort Juxtconsult has put into doing this research. However, it is of paramount importance that we look at the numbers from holistic perspective. India is an extremely diverse country and gap between rural and urban population and their habits are hugely different.

SOME more facts:-

BuzzGain, a DIY PR startup has tracked Indian blogosphere and has some interesting findings to share:

• Growth of blogs and bloggers in India is about 11% annually, in the last 2 years after expanding over 30% during the years 2004 to 2007.
• As expected, more urban (in large cities) bloggers than rural bloggers. The majority of bloggers in India tend to be from one of the 6 major metros, with an overwhelming 63% from cities as opposed to rural towns and villages.
  Mumbai and Bangalore lead the pack at over 0.45% of Internet users being bloggers while Kolkata and Hyderabad fall to 0.24%.
• Google’s Blogspot beats WordPress, when it comes to adoption (is it because WP.com doesn’t allow ads?)
  What’s interesting is that blog platforms such as Sulekha, Rediff and Blogadda do not have a significant
  number of English language bloggers. MSN Live Spaces and blogs from Six Apart surprisingly also do not appear on the top of the list.
• • Less than 0.05% of blogs in India are corporate blogs, compared to over 1% in other nations! – Corporates should surely read Tips for corporate blogging.
  • Entertainment (Bollywood) and technology related genres make up the majority of blog content with sports (cricket) coming in at 3rd.
  • The good news? Blog readership has steadily grown from about 12% of Internet users to 35%
    of Internet users
  • Blogs reach the young demographic with a pretty even spread among the genders, but as they get older, skew mostly men readers.

Search For Similar Sounds Using FindSounds online

Whenever we want to search for something, the first thing that comes to our mind is Google. However, there are situations when Google is not of much help, for example while looking for images similar to an image, or while searching for people. For such situations, we have sites like Tineye-The Reverse Image Search Engine and Pipl-To Search People on the Web. But what if you want to search for a sound? Not songs or ringtones, but sounds that you can use for your presentation or for composing some music. Google or any other commonly used search engines like Bing, Yahoo etc will be useless in this case.
Find Sounds fills that empty space by providing a search engine for sounds. While there are lots of search engines that let you look for text and images, FindSounds.com is the only search engine fully devoted to sounds.

How to search for sounds?

1. Point your browser to www.findsounds.com and enter the type of sound you are looking for, say, ocean.
2. Beneath the search bar there is an option to specify file format, minimum resolution and sample rate (which defines the quality of sound) and maximum file size.
3. Once you click the search button, you’ll see a search page showing top ten hits for that sound. To play or download the sound click on the URL of the audio file or the volume icon.
4. For every audio file listed, information such as size, number of channels, resolution, sample rate, and duration is mentioned. Link to the web page where the sound was originally found is also provided. You can even e-mail the sound to someone else by clicking on e-mail this sound.
   

An Interesting Feature…

The most interesting thing about this search engine is that you can search for sounds similar to some other sound. That is, instead of searching for sounds by providing a text label, you provide a sound file, and it searches for sounds similar to that. This is a better way of exploring sound because the audio files are searched based on how they sound, and not based on how they are labeled.  It is difficult at times to describe a sound and so not every sound can be labeled in a category.
However using FindSounds you can do a sound-like search only on the search results that are displayed. If you want to search for sounds similar to the ones stored on your computer then you’ll have to buy a software “FindSounds Palette”.
In the search results page just next to the audio file URL you see a button. When you click this, it shows sound similar to the one that was displayed along with percentage of similarity between the two sounds.

The FindSounds’ database has an excellent collection of sounds, ranging from the sound of a frog to sound of a washing machine! The only thing I didn’t like is that the ads appear to be a bit intrusive.
Interestingly enough the site has been in function since 1^st Aug 2000, but has maintained a low profile. Or is it that we are so used to of Google that we don’t know there are search engines beyond that

Internet Rumour - UNESCO Chooses Indian National Anthem as Best In The World-Acomplete hoax

According to this story, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), has announced that the Indian National Anthem is the best in the world.

The story is currently circulating via email, and has also been posted to many blogs and forums, especially those that target an Indian audience.

However, I could not find any evidence whatsoever that confirms the rather fanciful claim in the message. There is nothing about such an announcement on the UNESCO website, nor are there any credible news reports that back up the claim in any way. If such an announcement was true, it seems very likely that it would have been widely reported - and one would suspect, hotly debated - in media outlets both in India and around the world. 

Thus, it seems apparent that the story is no more than another pointless Internet rumour with no basis in fact.

As its name suggests, UNESCO conducts very important work on an international scale in the spheres of education, science and culture. Therefore, it seems extremely unlikely that UNESCO would waste its valuable time and resources on the rather frivolous, and ultimately meaningless, exercise of nominating the world's best national anthem.

And, in any case, even if an organization did choose a particular country's anthem as the best in the world, it is doubtful that the choice would be given much credence by nations other than the supposed "winner". Just how "good" a particular national anthem might be considered is an extremely subjective matter. Quite understandably, patriots in many nations are apt to view their own anthem as "the best" and are unlikely to be swayed from this opinion by even an organization as prestigious as UNESCO.Before I provide you with proofs to substantiate my claim, let me first show you the message I'm talking about:

Proof #1

If UNESCO had declared India’s National Anthem (or for that matter any other country’s national anthem) as the best in the world, don’t you think it would have received wide media coverage in India and around the world? Do you remember reading any such thing in the newspapers?

Proof #2

If UNESCO made any such announcement, shouldn’t there be a notification on their website? Unfortunately there is no such thing reported on UNESCO’s official website. Even if you try searching the archive on their website, you won’t find any information related to this. Neither India’s nor any other country’s national anthem has been announced as the best national anthem on UNESCO’s website- not now, and never in the past.

Proof #3

Now comes the best part! Do you know way back in 2008, there was an e-mail doing the rounds, which had the same message!! India Today (a popular Indian news magazine) sent out an e-mail to UNESCO at that time to verify this claim. This is the answer they got from UNESCO:

We are aware of several blogs in India reporting this story, but can assure you that UNESCO has made no such announcement concerning the anthem of India or any country

A lie that started in 2008 is still spreading at a rapid pace. It might have started as a harmless joke. But people behind it don’t realize that in doing so they are actually playing with sentiments of millions of Indians.
But should we blame others for spreading such rumors? Aren’t we equally responsible for that? Do we ever think about the authenticity of a message before forwarding it to our friends or posting it on Facebook?
A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.
